VW decides to put electric microbus into production

Volkswagen is to make an electric version of its Microbus, to be called the ID Buzz, sometime after 2022, writes Brian Byrne.

The vehicle will be the second in a series of specific electric cars under the ID brand. The first, a 4-door compact called the ID, is scheduled for 2022.

Announced at the Pebble Beach annual car event in Florida, the ID Buzz will also have a cargo carrying variant.

VW has said it plans to have more than 30 all-electric models by 2025.

Used Car Review Toyota Liteace 1989 1999

College life is fun right? With the school related events, parties thrown by your friends, numerous heartbreaks, sleepless nights due to the thesis and term papers, and the road trips. Myk Belmonte invites you to go back in time with this vehicle and reminisce. Keeping with this months theme, dont forget its assembled in the Philippines.

1989-1999 Toyota Liteace

History
Vans during the 80s and 90s in the Philippines come in various shapes, sizes, and price ranges. Large ones include the clan (family and gangsters) favorite L300 and Hiace, to the American inspired Honda Odyssey and Mazda MPV, and taking up the smallest part of the van chain are the Daihatsu Hijet (the one that install your telephone and cable lines use), Nissan Vanette, and the Toyota Liteace. The popular Tamaraw FX (and the descendant named Revo), Isuzu Hilander, Mitsubishi Adventure, and other backyard assembled AUVs dont make the cut since they dont have sliding doors .

With names of Townace, Masterace, and Van (Im serious about this); the Toyota Liteace was first launched in 1978. It was a wonder which provided seating for seven to eight people in a short wheelbase, good for city driving. The engine is located under the drivers seat and a 4WD option was made available. Production stayed until 2007 under four generations.

The Liteace was made available to the Filipino consumer in 1989 and became an instant hit. Slightly longer (and more roomier) than the Hijet but consumes less road space than the L300. From families to rich college students (think of Bagets and Tabing Ilog) to transport their barkada to anyplace, this little wonder captured the hearts and wallets of buyers. Production ceased in 1999 with the Hiace taking over the role that the Liteace did for Toyota. We cannot consider the Avanza as the direct descendant of the Litace despite having the same length and possessing small displacement engines.
< br />Value and Costs
For a price equivalent of a brand new compact sedan with a 1.6 engine back then, you can now obtain a second hand unit from P90,000 to P140,000. Basic models from 1989 to 1992 would set you back below a hundred grand or a snip while 1993 and up power loaded GXL variants takes up the upper side of the range. There are Liteaces (and even the Townace equivalent) from Japan wandering in the used car market, be cautious with them since problems regarding their conversion, air-conditioning systems, and decade old electronics that malfunction.

Before driving this van out of the dealers lot, have you checked these in the unit youve been looking? Inspect the cooling systems reliability (overheating is a common occurence for Liteaces), the air-conditioning mechanism (good luck if hot air blows your hair), the sliding doors capability to protect occupants from water entering during the rainy season (body damage can be the culprit at worst w hile there is a need for replacing the sliding-door rollers at best), and the carburetor system works properly.

Exterior and Interior
You and I have the same comment that the Liteace is old, but the design does not look current nor looks dated. Early models had their headlamps wrapped in framed seal beams, but swapping it with later model headlamps would remedy the cosmetic issue and also gives you better vision at night. Rust is not a problem unless the previous owner had crashed the van or the daily route involves flooded streets.

Despite the small exterior, the Liteace is big on interior room - with seven warm bodies loving the space provided. The interior bits are high on function factor but low on the bling; but you wont mind since cleaning the dashboard is easy via the usage of a high quality rag (not the pranelas sold in the streets). Notice the steering wheel, it is tilted in a 60 degree position, so get used to it if you are accustomed  to sedans.

Engine
We wish that the Liteace sold locally had a diesel engine, but Toyota Motor Philippines decided to equip the small wonder with a 1,486cc 5K gasoline engine that has 64hp at 4,800rpm and 102Nm at 3,200rpm on tap. It does not have any fuel injection system, but a carburetor to feed the engine. As what physics dictate us, having a weaker engine (no thanks to the carb engine and low power output combo) and a heavy body would result to low fuel consumption, but it can travel up to 145kph (as what the speedometer dictates) without stress.

Driving Impressions
Sit on the drivers seat, and you will experience driving a mini bus with your friends or family - no thanks to the angle of the steering wheel. But you wont mind it since it will give you an advantage when it comes to visibility, couple it with the high seating position. The mounted steering wheel can be a problem if tackling tight parking maneuvers that the metro h as to offer. The ride is on the comfortable side, thats if you avoid potholes littered anywhere in the streets. Your passengers wont complain in general, unless the air-conditioning system conks out.

Verdict
Filipinos are social persons, we love to travel and hang out with our friends (from your high school batch mates to the people youve met online) and our families. With a multitude of vans of different sizes and prices, the Liteace is a bargain if one prioritizes a limited budget and size factors. Jump in and enjoy the ride! Family and barkada bonding? More fun in the Philippines and with the Toyota Liteace.

The Good:
  • The ultimate space master
  • Perfect for city driving and parking
  • Good all around visibility
The Bad:
  • Power aint enough
  • Refinement not an advantage
  • Good luck if it overheats

Used Car Review Volvo S40 2005 2012

Searching for the safest car in the second hand car planet is a daunting task. Myk Belmonte finds what could be one.

2005-2012 Volvo S40

History
Naming a car is one of the most difficult tasks that a car manufacturer can do. Give your car a good name and youll be rewarded, give your car an embarrassing name and youll suffer. For some car manufacturers, particularly the luxury brands, they use numbers and letters combinations to save time and to avoid the embarrassment. In this case, Swedish car manufacturer Volvo had been using alphanumeric designation to avoid any torture of having their vehicle a hit or miss in the market.

The second generation S40 and its wagon counterpart, renamed as the V50, had been available worldwide in the middle of 2004. If the previous model had to share its platform with the Mitsubishi Carisma, this time it uses the Ford C1 platform which is also utilized by the Ford Focus and the Mazda 3 (another achievement, featuring cars from the same platform weeks apart!). Production shifted from Netherlands to Ghent, Belgium. The chassis used and majority of the components are developed by Volvo, while some mechanical parts are shared with the Mazda 3 and the European Ford Focus. It received a mid-cycle facelift in 2008 and was put to rest in 2012, with this line being replaced by the Volvo V40 later that year.

Viking Cars Incorporated brought in the second generation S40/V50 in late 2004. Only one engine is available for the S40, a naturally aspirated 2.4 I5 but a 2.5 I5 with turbo can be had via indent order. The last time you can have this car brand new is just last year.

Value and Costs
Comparing the resale value from its European colleagues, this one is on the lower side of the spectrum with units costing between P580,000-P850,000. Lucky are if you could snag a unit sold from March 2010 or later so you can have the remaini ng portions of the warranty. And while youre at it, proceed to the nearest Volvo dealer and scout for a certified pre-owned S40 to avoid some potential headaches.

Since this vehicle shares parts with the Ford Focus and the Mazda 3, you can ask online forums if you can interchange them, but if possible, stick 100% to original Volvo parts. There are no known problems but just have some concern with the basic worn-out parts and if possible, chug this car with premium fuel.

Exterior and Interior
Short on length but sporty in execution, thats what the Volvo S40 is all about. Notice about the outside design with some short overhangs located in the front and rear portions of the vehicle, large wheel arches, and top it off with some clean styling. This car does not grab attention, making it a quiet cruiser.

Quality and simplicity rules the S40s cabin, a strength of most Swedish vehicles. High quality controls and a logically placed positio n for them makes a good combination. Topping this off is an aluminum treatment (true aluminum, not fake or just foil) and a "floating"center console that frees up space at the back. Front space is decent but the ones in the rear have to suffer with some less than comfortable space for their knees.

Engine
All Philippine market S40s have a B5244S 2,435cc I5 that possess 170hp at 6,000rpm and 230Nm at 4,400rpm. There is also a 2.5 I5 turbo available but through an indent order, youll encounter this engine less while having your unit hunting. There is nothing special about this engine that it is one smooth operator but it is not as fast as others. This one is for the highway cruising, not for the drag strips.

Driving Impressions
Driving this baby on the straight line does show its strengths but go to a corner, youll see its apparent weakness, exhibiting tons of body roll that may cause some understeer. Good thing for that is th e standard stability control to keep things steady but it turns back to the event in which the car detects some slippage in the front wheels. While the transmission is responsive, give it a push and youll get a delay in power delivery, similar to a turbo lag, except this car does not have any turbocharger.

Verdict
Finding for a classy highway cruiser? The S40 is one good candidate especially that prices had fallen thanks to the depreciation that the first owner took. If you want some excitement behind the wheel, forget about this car.

The Good:
  • The quiet luxury car
  • Solid
  • More German than Swedish
The Bad:
  • This car does not want to have fun
  • Tight rear seat
  • Dull handling
The Pick: 2.4 variant

Used Car Review Nissan Teana 2010 2014

This week, Myk Belmonte gives you a comfortable car that can be yours for less.

2010-2014 Nissan Teana

History
We all know that Nissan was a choice among executives nearly 10 years ago or so. The magic of Nissans cold air-con and the roomy cabin of the Cefiro isnt anymore a proposition that back-seat riding people take, since Camrys and Accords had taken the helm that Nissan used to dominate. With rising incomes, the upper echelons now line-up for BMW 5 Series and Benz E Class saloons to take them anywhere they wish.

Under the J32 platform code, the second generation Teana debuted in several ASEAN markets (like Thailand, where this one is aplenty) in 2008 under the Teana (other countries used the Cefiro badge) or Maxima - for consumers land down under - nameplates. The platform being utilized is also shared with the Murano and several Renault vehicles sold in France. Although being marketed in some nations, it is succe eded by the L33 Altima (and being renamed as such).

In the RP context, however, Nissan Motor Philippines Inc. is notoriously known to bring world acclaimed cars too late to the market, like three to five years past their selling date. The J32 Teana arrived in late 2010 with two engine options and more plush. In March 2014, alongside a transition to a united Nissan, the L33 Altima was brought here. One can get the 250XL and 350XV models when it was new.

Value and Costs
Since a new Altima was introduced (or brought up to the grave), second hand Teana prices may fall down a bit but not to an extent it will fall below the million peso range. As a golden rule regarding late model vehicles, get the newest model you can in which the remainder of the warranty can be used.

Bad news? With this car being a low volume model, replacement parts are very limited so better be careful on driving. Also, with this car sporting a V6 engine expe ct high gas bills but if you can afford this type of car you should not be complaining.

Exterior and Interior
Large as it is, you wouldnt mind especially it provides the luxury that Nissans in the premium category give. So let the exterior speak for itself. One feature present in the 350XV is the panoramic glass ceiling which gives an airy feeling for the occupants.

The highlight, of course, goes to the cabin. The beige interior is nice to see but touching it with dirty hands is an eye sore plus a pain to clean. Of course, theres the wood paneling and the seating may be less for some, but with some magic strings theyve done a way.

Engine
Unlike the predecessor, this generation offered two V6 engines which may suit both personalities. The basic is a 2.5 V6 having 182hp and 232Nm that may be lacking for some but you wouldnt mind it anyways. Our recommended engine is the 3.5 V6 with 248hp and 335Nm being shared with the 350z and Murano but tuned in a different way.

Driving Impressions
One great feature of this sedan is the Xtronic CVT that is up to the task of keeping the car in the right gear whether you have a feather foot or a speed devil, theres an appropriate speed for you. Handling is fine but the suspension system isnt great on isolating road imperfections towards the cabin, but then you wouldnt be complaining about it.

Verdict
Theres no doubt the Teana is one fine vehicle, with the luxurious feeling that one can get without costing your arm and a kidney stone for a Benz. However, you may want to live with some imperfections that youll encounter, so decide wisely.
